Danny's legacy |
|
Danny is an all-time great servant to British boxing. I saw a recent poll where people were asked who is the greatest British boxer of all time. Joe Calzaghe came out on top. But Calzaghe made a career out of avoiding real fights. Apart from Lacy & Kessler, Calzaghe only ever fought mediocre fighters or old men (and Lacy turned out to be overhyped). Not trying to knock the "greatest British boxer of all time", but it shows how bizarre the British public can be in selecting their heroes. Surely the fights themselves should count for more than belts won? I could beat up somebody weaker than me or somebody too old to fight back. That wouldn't prove I was a great fighter. Danny fought war after war in his career.
If Danny had hand-picked his opponents maybe he could have had more success..? Certainly Danny could (and surely SHOULD) have avoided Skelton 2, Harrison 2, McDermott 1, Sosnowski, Baker & Chisora. He had other options. Better options:
*World or European title shot instead of Skelton 2 (Danny had beaten his two previously unbeaten arch-rivals and had nothing more to prove at domestic level. He should have demanded that Frank Warren deliver what he promised).
*ANYTHING other than facing a fired-up Harrison seeking revenge at a week's notice when in no shape to be fighting.
*After good performances abroad, the last thing Danny needed was a British title defense against a determined McDermott. It was not a mandatory fight if memory serves me correctly. There was talk of a world title fight against Samuel Peter at the time.
*Danny had a WBF title bout lined up in Egypt. Why take on a tough Sosnowski 3 weeks before?
*Danny should never have entered Prizefighter given the 3 round format.
*Danny should have waited for his shot at the Commonwealth belt instead of settling for Chisora.
We have discussed the subject of Danny's true potential before. Fitness and motivation have undoubtably played a part in Danny's underachievement, but decision-making and opportunities play a big part in a fighter's legacy. Ultimately it was Frank Warren who KOed Danny's world title dream.

People dont really look at who and at what age, its how papers make it out. and most british ppl dont even follow boxing, an unbeaten fighter is gonna look better then someone who has been beat a lot.
I'd say Calz was better anyway tbh. not in heart or interestingness but he won more then danny and where danny lost to lots of bad fighters calz was knocking them out and looking good with it.
Whereas most fighters have it all made b4 they even fight like Khan did Danny dont, and he also had a lot of mistakes. But tbh I wouldnt want it to change cos its more interesting I guess.

Calzaghe was a better boxer than Williams - but was he a better warrior? I don't think so! Slapping no-hopers and old aged pensioners doesn't make someone a hero in my eyes.
Of course the big error in Danny's career was fighting Klitschko (instead of one of the other rubbish champions) after beating Tyson. Danny had his pick of opponents. Brave Danny chose the toughest fight of all and turned up too heavy.
I regret the bad luck and lack of opportunities in Danny's career, but nothing else. True British hero!

yeah i guess
And Danny chose that I guess because he wanted to be the best, which he could have been tbh.
Wouldnt it be interesting to see Danny Vs. Bruno? I wounder who'd win that one. both full of heart.

He should have fought the loser champs, won, and then gone after the best.
Bruno was no better than Williams. In fact I'd say that Danny was slightly more skilled. But Bruno got more opportunities than Danny.

Yeah but it looked really good how he beat Tyson, it'd look even better if straight after he won the best belt out there.
Did Danny and Bruno ever spar? or have any chance of fighting or anything? Bruno lost to Tyson and Danny beat him I guess
